Turnag
A Saurak vassal principality in the inland southern peninsula — nominally subordinate to a larger power, but practically indispensable because of what its volcanic interior produces: saursteel, an alloy harder than iron, lighter than bronze, and heat-resistant, made only in Turnag’s geothermal forges. The Turnag Saurak call themselves “Forge-Scales.” Population: approximately 240,000 (225,000 Saurak).
Physical Characteristics & Appearance
Turnag Saurak carry earthen brown and rust-red scales with copper highlights — a regional variant shaped by volcanic heat exposure across generations. Their builds are robust and powerfully muscled, optimised for forge work and the physical demands of geothermal engineering rather than aquatic life. Standing typically above six feet, they are among the more physically imposing Saurak variants. The Forge-Scale caste — the master smiths of Turnag — are identifiable by distinctive copper and rust patterning that deepens with age and heat exposure, worn as a mark of honour.
Turnag Technology
The Turnag Saurak variant has earthen brown and red scales — heat-resistant adaptations reflecting generations of working near volcanic activity. Their technological specializations are unique on the continent:
Saursteel is the defining export. The unique Turnag alloy — produced using geothermal heat and local volcanic minerals that no other civilization has access to or can replicate — is harder than iron, lighter than bronze, and heat-resistant. It is among the most valued trade goods on the continent, prized by militaries and craftspeople alike.
Geothermal engineering: Turnag settlements tap volcanic heat for heating, cooking, and forge-firing, making Turnag the most energy-efficient civilization on the peninsula. The infrastructure for this is centuries old and deeply integrated into the built environment.
Acoustic engineering: Turnag Saurak use their UV-range hearing adaptations and the resonant rock of the Acoustic Highlands to build structures with precise acoustic properties — meeting halls where whispers carry clearly, defensive structures that confuse echo-based sensing.
Government, Culture & Position
The Forge-Prince rules domestically — collecting taxes, maintaining local courts, setting internal laws — but foreign policy is constrained by the overlord relationship. The principality retains its own culture and customs; it is not conquered, just subordinate. The Local Council of Lords advises the Prince; no veto power, but practical influence.
Strong local identity persists despite vassal status: “We are Turnag, not subjects.” The line between “protected” and “occupied” is a constant political tension that the current arrangement has not resolved — merely deferred. A sufficiently weak overlord or a sufficiently determined Prince could tip toward full independence. Both parties know this.
Turnag has warmer relations with ZimPo than most Saurak territories maintain with each other — occasional coordination on shared interests occurs, and Turnag’s saursteel is prized in ZimPo. Three regions define the territory: the Forge Valleys (core volcanic zone; geothermal forges), the Outer Reaches (agricultural and trade border zone; most non-Saurak population), and the Acoustic Highlands (resonant rock formations; Deep-Scale spiritual center).
