Feral and Untamed Lands
The southern continent of Aethoria — separated from the Eastern Continent by open ocean, approximately as large as the Eastern Continent based on coastal surveys, and completely unknown. No expedition has successfully mapped it. No permanent colony has survived. What lives here is not established. The name was given by cartographers who had never been there.
What Is Known
The coastline of the Feral and Untamed Lands has been partially charted from ships — enough to establish that a large southern landmass exists, that its northern coast is tropical in character, and that the climate likely transitions to extreme cold at the far south. Ancient ruins are visible from the sea along the northern coastline. Coastal waters contain creatures unlike anything seen elsewhere in Aethoria.
Magical instruments behave erratically near the coast — the same disruption noted near the Abandoned Lands, which has led some scholars to propose a connection between the two territories. Some expeditions reported seeing figures along the shore. None made contact.
The Expeditions
Three formal expeditions from the Eastern Continent have attempted the Feral and Untamed Lands. None ended in a way that produced useful information or encouraged repetition.
The First Southern Expedition: Ships returned. The crew reported figures in the jungle watching them from the shore. No contact was made. The expedition was considered a success by those who organized it; subsequent discussion focused on whether it really was.
The Second Southern Expedition: Two ships were lost; one returned, with crew reduced. The surviving captain’s log described something on the shore that appeared to have taken the forms of crew members who had not yet been lost — which the captain found difficult to record coherently and did not attempt to explain.
The Third Southern Expedition: Never returned. Their ships were found floating, empty, years later. No bodies, no obvious violence, no log entries after a certain date. The ships themselves were undamaged.
Why It Matters
The Feral and Untamed Lands represent the absolute limit of Aethoria’s known world — the place past which knowledge simply does not exist. This makes it narratively significant as a source of the unknown: threats that originate there, ruins that predate current civilization, possible survivors of whatever catastrophe emptied the Abandoned Lands to the north.
Some cults believe the Feral Lands are where the old gods withdrew when the current age began. Others believe the ruins along the northern coast are proof that whatever civilization once occupied the Abandoned Lands did not die — it moved. Whether anyone on the Eastern Continent will successfully discover what the southern continent holds, and whether they will survive the discovery, remains open.
