A Shadowmane Runner in bipedal stance - "The Swift Shadow of the Wilds" - capable of transitioning between stances while maintaining full speed.

The Shadowmane Runner represents one of Aethoria's most remarkable domesticated megafauna - a swift, powerful feline with the unique ability to transition between quadrupedal and bipedal locomotion. Known as "The Swift Shadow of the Wilds," these creatures have become indispensable for courier services, reconnaissance operations, and any task requiring speed and all-terrain capability.

Physical Characteristics

Standing 7-8 feet at the shoulder in quadrupedal stance and reaching 11-12 feet when bipedal, Shadowmane Runners are imposing creatures weighing 1,200-1,500 pounds. Their dense, striped fur features a distinctive mane-like ridge along their spine, while powerful, spring-like hind legs enable their remarkable dual-stance capability.

Their elongated, dexterous forearms with articulated joints allow manipulation of objects when bipedal, while retractable claws on all limbs provide superior grip across varied terrain. Large, amber eyes grant excellent night vision, and highly mobile ears can track sounds with precision. A long, balanced tail provides stability in both stances, enabling smooth transitions even at full speed.

Locomotion Capabilities

The Shadowmane's most remarkable feature is their locomotion versatility. In quadrupedal sprint, they achieve speeds of 45-50 mph, while bipedal running maintains 35-40 mph. Their long-distance trot of 20-25 mph can be sustained for 8-10 hours continuously. Most impressively, they can switch stances while moving without losing momentum, adapting instantly to terrain requirements.

Their excellent climbing ability and superior jumping capability make them ideal for navigating complex terrain. The smooth gait transition between stances provides a comfortable ride for mounted handlers, while natural camouflage ability aids in reconnaissance and scout missions.

Working Roles

Shadowmane Runners excel in multiple roles: swift courier service for urgent communications, light cargo transport (300-400 pounds), wilderness exploration, night operations where their superior vision provides advantage, search and rescue missions, border patrol, and scout operations. A single rider of up to 250 pounds can be carried, or they can pull small carts of 600-800 pounds.

Domestication and Bonding

Training begins at 1 year of age, focusing on stance transition, rider bonding, load tolerance, and command response. Night operation training develops their natural nocturnal capabilities. Prime working years span from 4-20 years, requiring regular exercise, high-protein diet, daily grooming, and regular claw maintenance. Strong pair-bonding with handlers is essential - Shadowmanes form lifelong attachments to those who train them from youth.

Guild Advisory

The Courier Guild and Scout Corps maintain Shadowmane certification programs. Guild certification is required for handlers, with specialized training in stance transition commands and night operations. High intelligence and strong bonding requirements make proper handler matching essential. Secure housing and regular social interaction are mandatory for animal welfare.
