King's Guard of Astoria

The elite knightly order sworn to protect the monarch of Astoria — chosen not by bloodline but by demonstrated loyalty, skill, and character.

Overview

The King's Guard of Astoria is the crown's personal protection order — the knights charged with the monarch's safety and with serving as the living embodiment of the crown's direct authority. What distinguishes the King's Guard from other knightly institutions in Astoria is the selection criterion: membership is determined entirely by demonstrated capability, loyalty, and character. Family name, noble birth, and political connection carry no weight in the process. This principle was not accidental. It was designed to produce a guard whose loyalty ran to the person on the throne rather than to the factions surrounding it.

The order is small by design. The King's Guard is not an army, not a standing force that projects power across the kingdom, but a close circle of individuals whose trust the monarch can rely on absolutely. That smallness is part of what makes it effective and part of what makes it politically significant — to be made King's Guard is to be publicly identified as someone the crown trusts completely, which in Astoria's court has consequences in both directions.

The order's selection process has produced unexpected outcomes. King Aldric, in the tradition of understanding his soldiers by being one of them, once enrolled in military training under a false identity and was trained by the man who would later become one of his Guard — without knowing who he was training. That the Guard produced a man capable of impressing a king while the king remained unidentified says something about the standard it maintains.
