Biography

Tariq is a Caitsith of unknown history who arrived at the court of King Aloyisius shortly after the coronation and was appointed Royal Vizier and Physical Training Master. He carries himself with the economy of movement that marks a warrior trained thoroughly enough that the training has become reflex. What he was before he appeared in Al's court — where he came from, what his years as a Caitsith warrior involved, what he did between the Imperial Academy and the throne room — is information he has not volunteered. No one has pressed him on it. Results have made pressing unnecessary.

He and Al knew each other at the Imperial Academy, where both were enrolled under circumstances neither has chosen to fully explain. They trained together, built the kind of trust that comes from shared difficulty and the particular honesty that emerges when no one is performing for an audience, and parted ways at graduation. Whether Tariq knew during those years who Al actually was is a question he has not answered directly. The fact that he presented himself at court within months of the coronation — deliberately, unhurriedly, as though he had already considered how the meeting would go — suggests that if he did not know then, he found out.

His public appointment explains his presence everywhere and gives him legitimate reason to move through every level of the court. His actual function is the intelligence apparatus Al needed and could not officially create: a network of eyes inside the noble houses and merchant guilds, watching the factions still resistant to the new laws and looking for those who may be moving from political opposition toward something more serious. The nobles who are watched do not know they are watched. Tariq intends to keep it that way until the knowing becomes useful.

Notable Achievements

Tariq built King Aloyisius's intelligence network from nothing, working under a cover appointment that gave him access to every part of the court without raising the suspicion that a dedicated spymaster role would inevitably attract. The operation runs quietly, reports directly to the king, and has so far remained entirely invisible to the parties it watches — which is, by every relevant measure, the only standard that matters.

His prior history as a Caitsith warrior, whatever form it took, produced a man who moves through dangerous situations with the ease of long practice and assesses threats with a precision that suggests he has been doing so professionally for some time. The gap between that history and his current role is his own. It has not, to date, been a problem.

Notable Actions

  • Formed a lasting connection with the man who would become King Aloyisius during their shared time at the Imperial Academy — under circumstances that remain, on both sides, selectively described
  • Presented himself at Al's court following the coronation and accepted appointment as Royal Vizier and Physical Training Master — the public role that conceals his actual function
  • Built and operates the Kingdom of Astoria's covert intelligence network, monitoring noble factions resistant to the crown's reforms and identifying threats before they become crises
  • Has maintained complete operational secrecy within a court full of people whose entire profession is gathering information about each other — no small achievement
