Biography

Ezra grew up among the forgotten of Ashkarra — street children, orphans, the abandoned and the broken who survive in the city's margins. He learned to pickpocket and steal out of necessity, and proved to be exceptionally good at it. Cunning enough to see angles others missed, bold enough to act on them. His elven ancestry shows in the points of his ears — a detail that marks him as something other in a city that already treated him as less than nothing. He built a family from the people no one else would take in: orphaned children, those too injured or disabled to fend for themselves, the ones the city had discarded. He kept them fed, kept them safe, and ran his small operation with genuine care.

Then a thieves guild came to collect dues. He refused. He came back one day to find his family had been locked in a warehouse and burned alive. What followed was not grief expressed outwardly — it was grief converted entirely into purpose. He identified the guild responsible, then spent the time it took to do something far more thorough than revenge. Through carefully placed rumors, selected murders, and planted evidence, he set the major thieves guilds of Ashkarra against each other in a war none of them realized was engineered. He watched them destroy each other. When it was over, he stepped into the wreckage.

The organization he built from that rubble is the Veiled Hands — not merely a criminal enterprise but a shadow administration for Ashkarra's underworld. The Veiled Hands manage the chaos the city ignores: the gangs, the street families, the unsanctioned economies that keep the underclass alive. They keep the peace between factions, provide food and protection to those who have nothing, and ask in return only what each person can actually give. The tithe is not coin — it is contribution: information gathered, messages carried, eyes kept open in places the organization cannot easily reach. No one is asked to do more than what they can manage. The principle is the same one Ezra lived by before the burning — you take care of your own, and your own take care of you — reapplied at the scale of an entire city's underworld. Ezra is its Boss. Almost nobody knows this. To the streets and to most of his own organization, he is a senior advisor, a trusted voice just below the top. The Boss is a phantom — a carefully maintained fiction that absorbs threats, commands loyalty, and cannot be touched because it does not exist. Ezra walks Ashkarra's markets freely, known and respected, while the legend of the unreachable Boss only grows.

Notable Achievements

Ezra did not seize Ashkarra's underworld — he manufactured the conditions for it to be handed to him. The guild war he orchestrated was one of the most sophisticated acts of criminal manipulation the city has seen: multiple factions, each acting on what they believed to be genuine intelligence, destroying each other while the man who set it in motion watched from a comfortable distance. None of the participants ever knew they were being played.

The double identity he constructed and maintains is the capstone. In a world where power makes you a target, Ezra found a way to hold absolute power while presenting a face too peripheral to bother with. Any attempt on the Boss of the Veiled Hands reaches a dead end. The real Boss is just an advisor — approachable, visible, completely safe — and the longer the fiction holds, the more untouchable the legend becomes.
